Thatched roof village in the snow

January 28, 2017

One of the villages along the old Saba-kaido trading route in Shiga running between Kyoto and the Sea of Japan coast to the north.  Unfortunately a lot of the distinctive traditional kayabuki houses now have their thatches covered by tiles or sheeting as re-thatching them is so incredibly expensive.  Thatched roofs are great for the winter – excellent insulators!

Bamboo Snow Tunnel

January 23, 2017

Tunnel of bamboo bearing the weight of today’s bump along our main access almost had us snowed in this evening.  Plenty of pot noodles in the storage, back-up genny fuelled up and dusted off.
